Kilohana Preschool

Kilohana Preschool, founded in 1966, is a non-denominational, non-profit preschool in Honolulu, HI, serving families in East Honolulu from its Niu Valley campus on the grounds of Kilohana United Methodist Church. Licensed by the Child Care Licensing Division of the Hawaii Department of Human Services, the school offers an integrated early childhood program for children ages 2–5 that balances teacher-directed and child-initiated activities. Curriculum areas include language arts, world and cultural awareness, music, art, physical development, and pre-reading readiness.

The program emphasizes a nurturing, secure environment that supports positive self-image, independence, listening skills, cooperation, turn-taking, social skills, and respect for self and others. The school partners with parents to provide supportive services when needed.

Facilities include four large classrooms, a dedicated napping room, and a spacious, grassy playground shaded by large trees with a sandbox, swings, a tricycle area, and an age-appropriate play structure, plus a covered lanai for rainy-day activities and special programs. Classes are divided by age, with smaller groups for younger children. Class sizes range from 12 to 20 students, and each classroom has a teacher and an aide. Typical staff-to-child ratios are 1:6 for 2-year-olds, 1:9 for 3–4-year-olds, and 1:12 for 4–5-year-olds.
