About
The Portland Montessori School is an independent, non-profit Montessori school in Portland, Oregon, founded in 1962 as Providence Montessori School. Recognized as Oregon’s first Montessori program and the longest running Montessori school in the Pacific Northwest, it serves children from 15 months through 6th grade on a one-acre campus in the North Tabor neighborhood of Northeast Portland.
Programs include a Toddler Community (15–36 months), Primary (ages 2.5–6), and an Elementary classroom (1st–6th grade), with additional Outdoor Program, after-school care, and summer camp options. The school day runs Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, with aftercare available until 5:00 pm and day camps offered during school closures.
Classrooms follow Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) principles and are led by guides and staff with AMI training. Multi-age environments emphasize curiosity, exploration, independence, problem-solving, confidence, and kindness, supported by a robust outdoor learning space used daily.
The school operates with a high-fidelity Montessori approach and a commitment to culturally responsive, equitable, and inclusive environments. Admissions begin with a one-on-one meeting with the director of admissions for families interested in toddler, preschool, or elementary programs.
