About
Training Wheels Child Care in Pittsburgh, PA has provided preschool education since 1979. Operated by the Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC), the center serves fully potty-trained children ages 3 to 5. It holds a Keystone STARS Level 2 rating and is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Founded by Dr. Betty H. Robinson, a child development specialist, the program focuses on school readiness and whole-child development.
Children are grouped into two classrooms—Preschool (3-year-olds) and Pre-Kindergarten (4- and 5-year-olds)—and follow the Frog Street Curriculum, supporting growth in language, cognition, self-help skills, and play. The Pre-K classroom integrates foundational reading, math, and science. Daily activities build phonemic awareness, early literacy, number and shape recognition, counting, sorting, and problem-solving. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided.
The center operates Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with aftercare available from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Training Wheels is a tuition-based program with subsidies for eligible families and participates as a partner site for Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts in collaboration with Pittsburgh Public Schools. Families receive regular communication through newsletters, daily updates, and bi-annual conferences, and may volunteer with required clearances. Enrollment begins with a brief lead form through the Brightwheel platform.
