About
The Yellow Horse Child Development Center provides early childhood care and education for families in Chesterfield, Virginia. Founded in 2017 as an in-home program and locally family-owned, the center is led by owner Fran, who brings 20 years of early childhood experience. Each classroom has a lead specialist with at least 10 years of field experience and training in cognitive, language, physical, and socio-emotional development and Developmentally Appropriate Practices.
The program follows a play-based approach influenced by Jean Piaget, with activities that build early literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and social skills. Offerings include nursery (0–16 months), older infant (16 months–2 years), toddler (2 years), and preschool (3–4 years). Infant care emphasizes meaningful interaction through stories, songs, and introductory sign language. Toddler classrooms introduce play-based learning and begin potty training around 2 years 6 months when children show readiness. Preschoolers use the 123 Learn curriculum and must be potty trained. Typical ratios are 1:4 (nursery), 1:5 (older infant), 1:8 (toddler), and 1:10 (preschool).
Ages & Stages screenings are conducted twice per school year. Daily routines include arts and crafts, workbooks, and circle time. Wipes and snacks are included. Hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with flexible openings as available; closed on federal holidays and aligned with Chesterfield County Public Schools for inclement weather.
