About
Tuckaway-Ellwood House Child Development Center serves families in Richmond, VA’s Carytown neighborhood as part of Tuckaway Schools, founded in 1971. The center enrolls infants through school-age children and offers infant, toddler, and preschool programs, after-school care, and a summer camp, with full-day and part-time options.
Programs use nationally recognized Developmentally Appropriate Practice methods to support social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth through play-based learning. Ellwood House features a large private playground. During summer, children visit nearby Tuckaway campuses two or three times a week for private pool time supervised by teachers and certified lifeguards; swimming lessons are provided at no additional cost.
Meals are prepared in the on-site kitchen by a dedicated chef and served family-style, with menus planned in accordance with USDA guidelines. The school community reflects diverse backgrounds, and families are encouraged to be involved; parents commonly visit during the day.
As part of a network of schools across the Richmond area, Tuckaway-Ellwood House benefits from experienced leadership, established practices, and child-focused facilities. Tuckaway Schools has been recognized multiple years as Best Pre-School and Best Child Care.
